New Delhi: Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Saturday visited injured Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, praising his courage and conveying the “full appreciation and praise” of the United Arab Emirates’ leadership.
Sheikh Hamdan said the flydubai pilot embodied the values of the UAE.
“During a visit to Captain Smit Machchhar… the flydubai pilot who embodied the highest degrees of courage, responsibility, and care for human life. From us, and from the leadership of the nation, he has our full appreciation and praise,” he posted on X.
“We are proud that he is part of our team… part of the story of our nation… and part of what the UAE stands for… a nation of compassion… a nation of peace… and a nation of life,” he added.
The Indian Embassy in the UAE said Machchhar was recovering well.
“Indian braveheart Capt. Smit remains under excellent medical care & is recovering well,” the embassy said.
It said it was in touch with his family and local authorities and was extending support for his recovery. The embassy thanked the UAE government for its care and joined well-wishers in praying for his good health.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to Machchhar on Friday and praised his bravery during the cockpit incident on the flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
After allegedly being stabbed repeatedly by his Omani co-pilot, Machchhar opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers, including pilots, to enter and stabilise the aircraft.
