Drug Use Distracts You From Dreams: Modi Launches Anti-Drug Campaign

Launching the 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan' virtually, Modi said the campaign is not meant only for the youth but also for their families, society and the country as a whole. The initiative seeks to eliminate substance abuse through sustained public participation and awareness.

Addressing a large gathering of young participants, many of whom described themselves as representatives of Gen-Z, the prime minister stressed that India's greatest strength lies in its youth and that protecting them from addiction is essential for the country's progress.

"Drug use disturbs your focus and takes you away from your dreams," Modi said, urging young people to channel their energy towards education, sports, innovation and nation-building instead of falling prey to substance abuse.

The campaign marks the beginning of a 100-week nationwide 'Jan Bhagidari' drive, under which awareness and community engagement activities will be organised every Sunday across the country. The initiative aims to encourage young people to become ambassadors of a drug-free society and inspire positive social change in their communities.

A wide range of activities has been planned as part of the campaign, including sports competitions, walkathons, yoga and meditation sessions, cultural programmes, awareness rallies, street plays, discussion forums, art competitions and other community outreach initiatives. These events are intended to promote healthy lifestyles while spreading awareness about the harmful effects of drug addiction.

The campaign was launched in the presence of Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, who said the initiative builds upon the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, launched in 2020 in line with the prime minister's vision of creating a drug-free India.

Mandaviya said the new campaign seeks to strengthen public participation by encouraging youth organisations, educational institutions, civil society groups and local communities to actively contribute to the fight against substance abuse.

The launch comes days after large-scale student protests demanding reforms in the public examination system were held in Delhi and several other parts of the country. Although the campaign focuses on drug prevention, the government's emphasis on youth engagement and well-being comes at a time when issues concerning students and young people remain at the forefront of public discourse.

Officials said the campaign will continue for nearly two years, with weekly activities designed to create sustained awareness, strengthen community participation and encourage young Indians to lead healthier, addiction-free lives while contributing to the goal of building a Viksit Bharat.
