Drug Gang Members Allegedly Run Over Odisha Constable, Three Held

Constable Seriously Injured In Late-Night Patrol Incident In Jagatsinghpur

A police constable was seriously injured after a car allegedly driven by members of a drug gang hit and ran over him during a late-night patrol in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Jagatsinghpur Sadar police station when constable Nityananda Senapati was on patrol duty.

According to police, the accused allegedly targeted Senapati and drove the vehicle over him before fleeing the spot. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have arrested three people in connection with the incident. Two of the accused were identified as Vicky Parija and Jacky Parija, who allegedly have links with a local drug-trafficking network.

Police said some other suspects allegedly involved in the incident are absconding and efforts are underway to trace them.

The arrested accused had previously come under the police radar in connection with drug-related activities. About a year ago, police had reportedly seized drugs worth around Rs 3 crore from people linked to the accused.

Police are investigating whether the attack on Senapati was connected to the accused's alleged drug-trafficking activities. Further details, including the circumstances leading to the incident and the identities of the absconding suspects, are awaited.

A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, police said.
