DMK Seeks Legal Protection for Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu against Changes in Future

Govichezhiyan said the sentiment of being Tamil, the Tamil language and Tamil Nadu’s identity were matters of common pride cutting across political differences

Chennai: DMK MLA Govichezhiyan on Monday extended the opposition party’s full support to the special resolution moved by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in the Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking to institutionalise the singing of 'Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu' at government and public functions.

Speaking in the Assembly, Govichezhiyan said the sentiment of being Tamil, the Tamil language and Tamil Nadu’s identity were matters of common pride cutting across political differences.

Govichezhiyan called for stronger legal safeguards to ensure that the issue was not subjected to repeated changes in the future. “Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu' should be given permanent and firm statutory protection so that no one can violate the provisions in future,” he said.

He recalled that the government had issued an order on December 17, 2021, making the singing of 'Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu' mandatory at government functions. He also highlighted the contribution of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and the Dravidian movement towards protecting the rights of the Tamil language and securing due recognition for it.“Upholding Tamil and safeguarding the rights of Tamils, while taking everyone along, have been the fundamental principles of the Dravidian movement,” he said.
