Didi Replaces Sick Sudip With Her Nephew As TMC Lok Sabha Head; Kalyan Quits As Party Chief Whip

“Given that our Lok Sabha leader, Shri Sudip Bandyopadhyay, is unwell and undergoing medical treatment, the MPs have unanimously decided to entrust Shri Abhishek Banerjee with the responsibility of leading the party in the Lok Sabha as the leader of the party until Sudip da returns to good health.” : Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee

KOLKATA: Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday dropped veteran MP Sudip Bandopadhyay as her party's parliamentary leader in the Lok Sabha for his absence at the monsoon session in the House due to illness and entrusted the job to her MP nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

The party faced a blow when another veteran, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee, quit as the chief whip in the LS after she found fault with his work. He claimed that Mamata Banerjee’s move that he claimed was not correct. According to sources, the party chief had asked Bandopadhyay about his health at a virtual meeting with her party MPs.

Bandopadhyay informed her that he was fit to attend the remaining days of the session. The TMC chief did not accept it. She instantly replaced him with Abhishek Banerjee for the job.

She stated in a post on her X handle, “Given that our Lok Sabha leader, Shri Sudip Bandyopadhyay, is unwell and undergoing medical treatment, the MPs have unanimously decided to entrust Shri Abhishek Banerjee with the responsibility of leading the party in the Lok Sabha as the leader of the party until Sudip da returns to good health.”

The party chief added, “We pray for Sudip da’s swift recovery and look forward to his continued guidance, enriched by his experience and deep knowledge of parliamentary proceedings.” Her displeasure about the liaison among her party MPs prompted Kalyan Banerjee to resign as the party's chief whip in the evening.

Kalyan Banerjee alleged, “Didi talked about coordination among our party MPs not happening properly which means the blame goes on me. She also pointed out that the previous speakers’ list was not correct. This was wrong because the list was made only after discussing it with her.”

He added, “I can't accept anything wrong even if I need to quit politics for that.” Before leaving the post, Kalyan Banerjee attacked his fellow parliamentarian from Krishnanagar Mahua Moitra in a long post on X-handle for calling him a 'pig' in a recent podcast.
