Stampede-Like Situation at Mahakaleshwar Temple Complex, 13 Fall Ill

Bhopal: At least 13 devotees were on Monday fell ill amid a stampede-like situation at the Nagchandreshwar temple located on the third floor of the famous Mahakal shrine in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.

The Nagchandreshwar temple opens only once in a year on the Nag Panchami Day which falls on Monday.

An unprecedented rush of devotees was witnessed in the premises of Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain on the Nag Panchami Day which also coincided with the fourth Monday of the Saawan (rainy season) when people throng the ancient shrine of Mahakaleshwar to pay obeisance to the presiding deity, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.

According to Mahakaleshwar temple management officials, a record 7.12 lakh devotees visited the shrine on Monday.

According to unconfirmed reports, a rumour of electric current in a barricade triggered panic among the devotees resulting in a stampede-like situation.

At least 13 devotees fell ill and were provided medical treatment at the spot, officials said.

Ten of them were discharged after the first aid treatment.

However, three others were shifted to the district hospital at Ujjain.

Ujjain district collector Roshan Singh however told the local media that things are under control.
