Not interested In Videos, No Time To Watch : SC On Police Action Plea
The CJI Declined the request for urgent listing of plea against police action during CJP protest and made it clear that the bench was not inclined to examine video footage at the mentioning stage.
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined an oral request for urgent listing of a plea challenging alleged police action against students during a protest march in Delhi.
The matter was mentioned before a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, also comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
"I have the videos as well regarding police brutality... If it can be listed tomorrow (Thursday)... Students are there," the petitioner’s counsel submitted.
The counsel said the plea contained three prayers and alleged that students were subjected to police brutality during the protest.
The bench declined the request, with the CJI stating that it was not inclined to examine video material at the mentioning stage.
"We are not interested in videos, we don't have time to watch... We don't want to watch videos," the CJI said.
When the counsel reiterated the allegations and referred again to video evidence, the CJI said, "Don't waste our time. We don't want to watch any videos."
The plea pertains to police action during a protest march to Parliament by the Cockroach Janta Party on Monday, the opening day of the Monsoon session, when students and youth gathered in central Delhi seeking the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities.
Clashes were reported during the march, with security personnel using canes and tear gas to disperse protesters attempting to move towards Parliament.
