Pistol Goes Off During Screening at Varanasi Airport, Two Injured

A female security personnel was hit on the leg and another person standing nearby was hit on the thumb, injuring both of them

New Delhi: Two security personnel were injured at Varanasi airport on Sunday after a loaded gun belonging to an Air India Express passenger accidentally went off during a security check.

The incident occurred around 9.30 am when the passenger, who was scheduled to travel from Varanasi to Mumbai on Air India Express flight IX 1810, declared a licensed 7.62 mm pistol along with 21 live cartridges at the check-in counter, as required under procedure.
According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) officials, the passenger was escorted to a designated screening area for mandatory security formalities. During handling and inspection of the firearm, a round was accidentally discharged.
The projectile ricocheted and injured two screening personnel. Both were immediately given assistance and shifted to a hospital in Varanasi for treatment.
Officials said the incident was quickly contained and airport operations continued without disruption. Local police were informed and the passenger was detained for investigation and further action in accordance with law.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is examining the circumstances leading to the incident, including whether prescribed procedures for handling and carriage of licensed firearms at airports were followed. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings, officials said.
