Opposition MPs Protest FCRA Amendment Bill in Parliament

Congress MP Hibi Eden termed the proposed legislation a “draconian law” that could adversely impact minorities and NGOs across the country

New Delhi: Opposition MPs on Wednesday protested at the Makar Dwar of Parliament, demanding the withdrawal of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026.

Congress MP Hibi Eden termed the proposed legislation a “draconian law” that could adversely impact minorities and NGOs across the country.

Speaking to ANI, Eden said the bill would hamper the interests of not just minorities but also several NGOs operating in India. He added that the opposition would strongly condemn and demand the withdrawal of the bill.

Congress MP Dharamvir Gandhi also opposed the legislation, stating that decisions of such nature should be impartial and benefit all sections of society rather than being selective.

Revolutionary Socialist Party MP N.K. Premchandran said the issue goes beyond any one community, alleging that the bill reflects a broader agenda to curtail the rights and privileges of minorities.

The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, has been listed for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah set to move it for discussion.

The bill, introduced on March 25, seeks to amend the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, and aims to enhance transparency and accountability in foreign contributions received in India.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to move a statutory resolution approving a notification imposing a Special Additional Excise Duty of ₹50 per litre on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF).

The move comes amid rising global crude oil prices and increasing operational costs in the aviation sector.

The Lok Sabha will begin proceedings at 11 AM with the Question Hour, followed by the laying of papers by ministers including Jitendra Singh and Ravneet Singh.

The House will also take up reports and statements of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for the fiscal year 2025–26.

Key presentations by BJP MPs Jagdambika Pal and Jai Prakash will include reports on excesses over grants, railway derailments, and issues related to service tax and GST collections from passengers.
