Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has nominated her MP nephew Abhishek Banerjee to represent her party, Trinamul Congress, in the Centre's diplomatic outreach team on Operation Sindoor to various countries.
Her decision came after Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju called up the Trinamul Congress supremo, now in North Bengal, on Tuesday morning and spoke to her about her party's representation in the all party delegation.
Later the TMC posted on X-handle, “We’re delighted to share that our Chairperson Smt. @MamataOfficial has nominated Nat'l GS Shri @abhishekaitc to represent Trinamool Congress in the all-party delegation for India’s global outreach against terrorism.”
It added, “At a time when the world must unite to confront the growing threat of terrorism, Shri Abhishek Banerjee’s inclusion brings both conviction and clarity to the table. His presence will not only reflect Bengal’s firm stand against terror but also strengthen India’s collective voice on the global stage.”
Earlier, former cricketer turned Berhampore TMC MP Yusuf Pathan withdrew his name as it was recommended by the Centre but not his party. Meanwhile, Ms Banerjee is sending a delegation of five TMC MPs to Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday to meet the people affected in the recent attacks from across the Line of Control.
The TMC said, “Under the guidance of AITC Chairperson Smt. Mamata Banerjee, a 5-member delegation will be proceeding to Srinagar, Poonch, and Rajouri. The delegation comprising: Derek O'Brien, Md Nadimul Haque, Manas Bhuniya, Sagarika Ghose and Mamata Thakur*, will be in the region from May 21 to 23 to express solidarity with the people affected by cross-border attacks, and share the grief of the families who have lost their loved ones.”
