Leaders Hail Modi as He Becomes India's Longest-Serving Elected PM

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office and surpassing former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's record of 4,398 days.
The milestone drew widespread praise from senior leaders across the government and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), who described it as a historic moment in India's democratic journey and credited PM Modi's leadership for transformative changes across governance, the economy, infrastructure, social welfare, and India's global standing.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the Prime Minister's Office had provided decisive and strong leadership throughout the past 12 years, steering the country through numerous challenges. She noted that the government's guiding principles of Antyodaya and Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas had ensured that the benefits of development reached every section of society.
Sitharaman said the NDA government had implemented bold reforms and large-scale initiatives with unprecedented speed and scale, helping India move steadily toward the goal of becoming a developed nation.
Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Manohar Lal and CR Patil also congratulated the Prime Minister, highlighting what they described as a period of transformative governance. They pointed to progress in economic growth, digital transformation, infrastructure expansion, social empowerment and welfare delivery, as well as flagship initiatives such as the Swachh Bharat Mission, Ujjwala Yojana, metro expansion and the UDAN regional connectivity scheme.
Patil described PM Modi's 12-year tenure as "unparalleled," saying the government's comprehensive planning and effective implementation had ensured that welfare benefits reached people across regions and social groups.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan said the achievement reflected a transformative era in India's development journey rather than merely the length of time spent in office. He credited PM Modi's leadership with driving progress in economic development, infrastructure, technology, social empowerment and enhancing India's global stature.
The Vice President also highlighted efforts to promote India's cultural heritage and civilisational identity, citing initiatives such as the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam, the installation of the Sengol in the new Parliament building, and the repatriation of artefacts from abroad.
Radhakrishnan further said that inclusive development policies under PM Modi had helped lift more than 25 crore people out of absolute poverty and strengthened opportunities for millions of families across the country.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Lok Bhavan also extended congratulations to the Prime Minister, praising his role in advancing inclusive development and bringing governance closer to citizens through the spirit of public service.
Leaders across the political establishment described the milestone as a significant chapter in India's political history, expressing confidence in PM Modi's continued leadership as the country works toward its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
