Late TMC MLA's Daughter to Fight WB Bypoll

TMC leader Joyprakash Majumdar said, “She is not new in politics. She was involved in many development work with her father. People of Kaliganj know and love her.”

Kolkata: Trinamul Congress has fielded a young face for the Assembly bypoll which will be held on June 19 at Kaliganj seat in Nadia of West Bengal. The candidate, Alifa Ahmed (38), is the daughter of TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed whose untimely death three months ago has pushed the seat into a bypoll.

On Tuesday, TMC posted on X-handle, “We are pleased to announce that Smt. @MamataOfficial has nominated Alifa Ahmed as our candidate for the upcoming by-election in Kaliganj. A former Zilla Parishad member, Alifa shares a strong bond with the people of the constituency, who are looking forward to electing her as their MLA.”

Nasiruddin, popularly known as ‘Laal’da, had won from Kaliganj in 2011 and 2021. His victory margin was around 47,000 votes last time. The TMC MLA however fell ill at home in February this year. He was admitted to a hospital but died at the age of 70. Now, TMC eyes at retaining it's seat riding the fame of Nasiruddin through her daughter.
