New Envoy Gor Says US Values Its Ties With India After Meeting Modi

Gor, accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas, is on a six-day visit to New Delhi, days after the Senate confirmed his appointment as the US envoy to India.

New Delhi: US Ambassador designate Sergio Gor on Saturday said that his country “values its relationship with India” after calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions focused on defence, trade, technology, and critical minerals cooperation.

Gor began his six-day visit to India amid tensions in bilateral relations following Washington’s imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports in August, along with several other measures by the Trump administration that have impacted Indian interests.

The Ambassador-designate also met external affairs minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and foreign secretary Vikram Misri before his meeting with the Prime Minister.

In a post on X, Modi said he was “glad” to receive Gor, adding, “I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”

Gor said his meeting with the Prime Minister focused on defence, trade, technology, and critical minerals, adding that President Donald Trump regards Modi as “a great leader and personal friend.”

“We just finished an incredible meeting with Prime Minister Modi where we discussed key bilateral issues, including defence, trade, and technology,” Gor was quoted as saying. “We also spoke about the importance of critical minerals and their significance to both our nations.”

He added, “The Us values its relationship with India, and under the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Modi, I am optimistic about the days ahead for both nations.”

“President Trump considers Modi a great and personal friend. In fact, just before I left for New Delhi, they had an incredible phone call, a conversation that will continue in the weeks and months ahead,” Gor said.

“It’s an honour to serve as President Trump’s ambassador to India, and I look forward to advancing this important relationship and helping it grow and deepen further,” he added.

Gor, accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas, arrived in New Delhi just days after his appointment as U.S. envoy to India was confirmed by the US Senate.

Following his meeting with Gor, EAM S. Jaishankar said, “Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. We discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. I wish him the best for his new responsibility.”

External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said foreign secretary Misri had a “productive exchange on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and its shared priorities” during his meeting with the Ambassador-designate.
