Find Legal Recourse to SIR Issue, Says FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Regarding the SIR issue, Nirmala said an investigation was under way at the Supreme Court-level, based on complaints raised across the country

TIRUCHY: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said people can find a legal solution for the SIR issue, or, like the Opposition, go out on the streets and protest.

Speaking to mediapersons at Tiruchy on Monday regarding the SIR issue, she said an investigation was under way at the Supreme Court-level, based on complaints raised across the country. One can participate in the investigation, present the government’s arguments, and seek justice through the court.

Alternatively, as an Opposition party, one can come out on to the streets and protest, which is exactly what is happening now, she added.

Addressing the currency value, she said, neither you nor I can determine the value of a country’s currency; its value depends on the prevailing situation in the country and it must reach its natural state on its own. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) tries to keep it balanced without letting it fluctuate heavily, but, at the same time, RBI does not dictate that it must remain at a specific fixed level, according to the minister.

Referring to the issues like the debt burden, it should be discussed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, she said, and added that as a Union minister, it would not be appropriate for her to speak about the status of a state. When the Opposition parties debate this in the Assembly, the general public will come to know the reality, she pointed out.

A specific group of ministers is responsible for controlling price hikes. The Central government is taking continuous measures to control the rise in the prices of various food items, including rice. We are also creating avenues for farmers to get a fair price for their agricultural products. The Central government will not allow the prices of essential commodities, including rice, to skyrocket, she assured.

Referring to the debt situation of every country after the Covid-19 pandemic, she said efforts have been continuously made in India before and after the Covid pandemic to reduce debt.

In every annual budget, we have been steadily reducing the country’s debt burden. We have stated that by 2030, the country’s debt will be only 50 per cent of its GDP, she said.

While conceding that people’s concern regarding the country’s debt burden was justified, she said at the same time, the Central government was consistently reducing it.

Efforts were also being made to increase the per capita income of every individual in the country. Concurrently, the Central government is taking steps to raise individual income by overcoming disasters such as Covid-19, wars, and rising fuel prices, she stated.
