Congress Workers Protest Outside SC Over Unnao Rape Case

The demonstration was led by All India Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba

New Delhi: Congress workers staged a protest outside the Supreme Court on Monday, demanding justice for the survivor of the 2017 Unnao rape case.

The protest came ahead of a hearing by a three-judge vacation bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) plea challenging the Delhi High Court order that allowed suspension of the life sentence of Unnao rape convict Kuldeep Sengar.

The demonstration was led by All India Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba. Several protesters were detained by the police during the agitation.

Women’s rights activist Yogita Bhayana said the survivor remains hopeful of justice. “The victim is hopeful that she will get justice. Her health condition is stable, and she is inside the courtroom as she wants to fight her own battle. I am sure the Supreme Court will give justice to this girl,” Bhayana told reporters.

On December 23, the Delhi High Court suspended the life sentence awarded to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar pending appeal and granted him bail. Sengar was convicted in December 2019 in the Unnao rape case and sentenced to life imprisonment along with a fine of ₹25 lakh. However, he continues to remain in jail as he is serving a separate 10-year sentence in another CBI case related to murder.

Earlier on Sunday, the survivor expressed faith in the Supreme Court and appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure her safety so she can pursue her legal battle without fear.

Speaking at a protest organised by the All India Progressive Women Association (AIPWA) in the national capital, the survivor alleged that Sengar had bribed officials, including a CBI investigating officer and a Delhi High Court judge. She claimed her family has suffered since his bail, with her husband losing his job and her children and witnesses facing threats.

“I have faith that I will get justice in the Supreme Court. Protection must be provided to those whom we name before the CBI. I request Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure my safety so that I can fight my case fearlessly,” she said.
