Raipur: At least 14 Maoists were killed on Saturday in two separate encounters with security forces in the south Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, police said.
In Sukma district, bodies of 12 Maoists were recovered from an ongoing encounter in a forest area, while two Maoists were killed in a separate exchange of fire in Bijapur district. Both encounters were still underway at the time of reporting.
“Bodies of 14 Maoists have so far been recovered in two separate encounters in Sukma and Bijapur districts. The encounters are continuing at both locations, and further details will be available once operations conclude,” Bastar Inspector General of Police P Sunderraj said.
Security forces launched search operations in the jungles of Sukma and Bijapur following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of armed Maoist cadres in the area.
According to police, the encounter in Bijapur began around 5 am, while the exchange of fire in the Sukma jungles started at about 8 am.
Security forces also recovered a large cache of sophisticated weapons from the encounter sites, including AK-47 rifles, INSAS rifles and self-loading rifles (SLRs).
Further details are awaited as operations continue.
