CPM wants debate on graft in the VMC

The CPM demanded cancellation of the proposed auction of 73 plots in Vambay Colony.

Vijayawada: The CPM on Tuesday demanded a debate on corruption in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation at the VMC council meeting to be held on November 3.

CPM state executive committee member Ch. Babu Rao, addressing the media here, alleged that the Telugu Desam corporators had turned as collection agents for TD ministers by getting involved in illegal activities.

He alleged that crores of rupees were swindled during the Pushkaram works and demanded that stern action be taken against those involved by holding a discussion at the council meet.

“During Krishna Pushkaram, the TD corporators and leaders turned contractors and stole Rs 1,000 crore of public money in contracts relating to sanitation works, catering, Pushkar Nagar and other works.

He demanded the VMC to hold a debate on the issue in the council meeting.

Reminding that an ACB inquiry was done into the illegal grabbing of land belonging to the poor by TD MLAs Bonda Umamaheswara Rao and Jaleel Khan, the CPM leader demanded that the report be made public at the VMC meet.

He objected the proposal regarding hike in the beneficiary contribution to Rs 1.60 lakh from the Rs 10,000 for one pucca house under the JNNURM scheme.

He also demanded cancellation of the proposal to auction 73 vacant housing plots in Vambay Colony and demanded constructing a housing colony in those plots by the VMC.

CPM floor leader in the VMC, G. Adilakshmi, opposed the proposal to hike drinking water tap charges, drainage cleaning charges, waste garbage collection fee and installation of water meters. She said that CPM will fight against anti-people policies of the TD.
