George involved in sweeping machines purchase scam: BJP

The upshot: BBMP paid Rs 89 lakh for each machine and Rs 2.48 crore per machine for operation and maintenance for five years, he said.

Bengaluru: Leaders of the state unit of the BJP continued to target minister for Bengaluru development K.J. George, leveling a new allegation that he along with officers of BBMP were involved in a mega scam in procurement of sweeping machines and compactors worth over Rs 850 crore for transportation of garbage.

Releasing documents in support of the allegation, BJP legislator Dr Ashwathnarayana told the media on Monday about misappropriation of funds by violating the tender process. Though the tender process was annulled by the special commissioner, as many as eight machines were purchased at higher cost from Delhi- based TPS company, he alleged.

He charged that by violating tender norms, BBMP officials had purchased vehicle-mounted sweeping machines instead of self-propelled machines. The upshot: BBMP paid Rs 89 lakh for each machine and Rs 2.48 crore per machine for operation and maintenance for five years, he said adding that Mr George, joint commissioner Sarfraj Khan, executive engineer Hemalatha, technical assistant Lokesh and TPS company were involved in this scam.
