Chennai: Heavy traffic snarls, water-logging cause delay in bus services

Operational delays were witnessed in Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, OMR, Nandanam, Vadapalani and T Nagar.

Chennai: Due to heavy rains, two bus breakdown cases, in Nandambakkam and Guindy were recorded in the city. Operational delays were witnessed in Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, OMR, Nandanam, Vadapalani and T Nagar.

According to sources, buses from South Chennai including Thiruvanmiyur, East Coast Road, Neelankarai, Besant Nagar and Adyar arrived at least 40 minutes behind the schedule. Also, a few buses could complete their morning trips only in the afternoon. Several buses were stuck in Saidapet, Nandanam, Ambattur, Teynampet and Pallavaram. Due to this, all terminuses witnessed a delay in operation.

Though drivers and conductors arrived on time for duty in the morning, a lot of them could not come on time for afternoon schedule due to traffic jams, said sources. Thiruvanmiyur, Anna Nagar and Ambattur bus depots were partially submerged in water and passengers were put into hardship due to this. When contacted, an official from the Metropolitan Transport Corporation said, “Two recovery vans are ready to address emergencies and each depot has at least two spare buses and enough workmen.”

Vehicular movement hit

  • For a brief period, commercial vehicles plying to Chinnamalai were
  • diverted towards Raj Bhavan to reduce traffic congestion on Anna Salai.
  • Thillaiganganagar, Pazhavanthagal and Adambakkam subways had pools of water and most of the traffic was diverted to road overbridges.
  • Santhome High road, Dr Radhakrishnan Salai, Grand North Trunk (GNT) Road from Puzhal flyover to Karanodai, Vyasarpadi, Pallavaram, Nandanam witnessed heavy traffic snarls.
