Act to improve performance of local bodies: K Chandrasekhar Rao

He said up to 3,500 new gram panchayats would be created in the state after the passage of new Act.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said the government would enact legislation in the ongoing Assembly session to improve the performance of local bodies. Funds will be allocated based on performance under the new law.

The CM said local bodies were not functioning effectively and not taking the responsibility of even planting saplings handed over by the forest department.

"When I met the Prime Minister in Delhi during the NITI Aayog meeting, I told him that there was no use in allocating huge funds to local bodies unless they work efficiently. The local bodies have almost become dysfunctional,” Mr Rao said.

He said up to 3,500 new gram panchayats would be created in the state after the passage of new Act. The state now has 8,684 gram panchayats. He said the government would conduct elections to the panchayats as per schedule in early 2018. He said the TRS was not afraid of the elections.

Mr Rao said the government implements various schemes for the welfare of people and development of villages and towns but the desired results can be achieved only of local bodies play active role and ensure proper implementation.
