Madhav Gadgil to visit landslide-hit Puthumala
WAYANAD: Eminent ecologist Madhav Gadgil will participate in a host of programmes during his visit to the areas hit by floods and landslides next week.
Mr Gadgil, who will receive the Karma Award at Kottakkal on September 4, will visit Puthumala in Wayanad on September 5.
He will interact with the survivors of the landslide and also study the spot. Later, he will attend a public function organised by the Wayanad District Environmental Collective at Lalith Mahal auditorium. Dr V.S. Vijayan, Hareesh Vasudevan, programme coordinator Vinod Payyada and N. Badusha among others will participate in it. In the afternoon, a farmers collective at Kelakam near Iritty in Kannur will accord a reception to him where he will interact with the farmers and discuss their issues.
He will attend a seminar on the 'Rights of indigenous communities on natural resources' organised by the Kannur District Environmental Council in Kannur on September 6 . He will also visit Kandamkali near Payyannur where an agitation is on against the proposed dedicated fuel storage terminal. Gadgil will inaugurate a meeting of protestors at Payyannur boys' high school in the evening and return to Pune on September 7.
The recurring calamities on the Western Ghats have increased the reputation of Gadgil, who had predicted the changed character of the Western Ghats. He had warned that within five years, nature would turn furious in the Western Ghats, making life miserable for the people in the state.
He had faced protests at many places during his visits to Kannur, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts from 2012 to 2014.
