Kochi: Now register vehicles at any RT office in state

So far vehicle owners need to produce documents regarding permanent or temporary residence in the respective RT office only.

Kochi: Now owners can register their new vehicles with any RT offices across the state irrespective of their place of residence from September 1.

So far vehicle owners need to produce documents regarding permanent or temporary residence in the respective RT office only. This has posed difficulty to those who stay outside the state or native district. They have to bring the new vehicle to the RT office in the jurisdiction of their place of residence.

"So far vehicles were being registered only in the home district. Under the new system, a vehicle buyer can now submit application to any DTO in the state for registration of the vehicle by producing valid documents like driving licence, passport, Aadhaar card and photo identity card," a senior MVD official said.

The changes are being effected following the amendment of the Central Motor Vehicles Act which the Ministry of Law and Justice notified on August 9.

Another change made is that the vehicle owners can submit online the application for recording any change in place of residence or name of working institution in the Certificate of Registration (RC).

Meanwhile, the state is yet to make any notification with regard to the implementation of the changes. The various RT offices didn't receive any direction even on Friday evening.

When contacted, Transport Minister A.K. Saseendran told DC that the details of enforcing the changes will be worked out on Saturday and that the necessary direction will be given.

"One of the issues will be whether to allow registration in places of high demand (Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode) even for those residing in other places. A decision will be taken in tomorrow's meet," he said.
