HC quizzes Telangana on speed limiters

The state had ignored the fact that all transport vehicles should be fitted with a speed limit device.

Hyderabad: The High Court issued notices to the transport department directing it to reply to a PIL seeking a direction of affix speed limiters on transport vehicles.

The division bench of Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and Justice A. Abhi-shek Reddy was dealing with a petition filed by an NGO, Right Society, alleging that the department was not implementing the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court to fit speed limiting devices. The petition said the department was not adhering to the rules promulgated in the Central Motor Vehicles Act, which had resulted in a large number of road accidents.

Counsel for the NGO said that the speed limiting devices were mandatory. The RTC operated more than 10,000 busses and most were not fitted with the safety device.

The state had ignored the fact that all transport vehicles should be fitted with a speed limit device.

The bench adjourned the PIL for two weeks and issued notices to the principal secretary, transport, and the transport commissioner.
