Chennai: Gang arrested for robbing commuters
Chennai: A special team of Government railway police (GRP) on Thursday arrested a six-member gang of robbers from outside the state at the M.G.R Central railway station on the charge of robbing gold chains and mobile phones from rail passengers. Police recovered five mobile phones and four sovereigns gold from their possession.
Following repeated instances of chain and mobile snatchings from passengers in the Central railway station in the last two months, a special team was constituted to apprehend the culprits involved in such offences. It came to light that the offences were being committed by a gang of persons who were not natives of Tamil Nadu nor resident in the State. A special team, which kept a strict vigil, rounded up the six-member gang in the railway station on Thursday night.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to having been involved in such offences. Six members including three men above 50, all from West Bengal, have been arrested. The gang had committed the offences in Egmore and Central railway stations in the city. The gang confessed to robbing gold jewellery and mobile phones to sell them in Bengal in order to live a lavish life. Once the money got over, the gang would again land in Chennai and rob passengers.
