Kerala CM chalks out national calamity mitigation plans
Thiruvananthapuram: Restricting construction at calamity-prone areas, imparting disaster management skill training to public and providing insurance coverage to all small-scale traders were some of the natural calamity mitigation plans listed out by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the Assembly on Thursday.
The chief minister, however, lamented that the MLAs did not come up with any constructive suggestion for rebuilding a "new Kerala," even as it was one of the objectives of convening the special one-day session.
Rebuilding a "new Kerala" involved various challenged like fund mobilisation and raw material procurement, he added.
The session that lasted for nearly nine hours mainly focused on the reasons that led to the flood, especially allegations over the opening of dams. Replying to the discussions, Mr Vijayan said that all compensations announced for flood victims were being distributed Kits containing essential commodities were already distributed to 2.3 lakh of the 3.6 lakh families who were in relief camps. Families who sought refuge at houses of friends and relatives would also be given the kits and so far about 10,000 such families were identified. All these kits would be supplied in two to three days.
