Telangana government can't interfere: Chief Qazi

“It has no right to interfere in our affairs. However, we are open to suggestions for improving our work and records,â€Mr Quadir Ali said.

Hyderabad: Mir Quadir Ali, president, Anjuman-e-Qaza’at (council of qazis) Telangana State, says that the government has no power to interfere with the affairs of the qazis.

“It has no right to interfere in our affairs. However, we are open to suggestions for improving our work and records,” Mr Quadir Ali said.

When asked about the fee prescribed for solemnising nikah, he said that the council had in 2015 fixed Rs 2,000 as the fee.

“It was fixed taking into consideration the prevailing economic conditions. Since then, there has been no hike. For poor families, qazis relax the fees on humanitarian grounds,” Mr Quadir Ali said.

He pointed out that all records pertaining to nikahs have been with utmost care since decades. “This requires a lot of effort and hard work. We get the uniform ‘nikahnama’ (booklet) and other forms from the Wakf Board office,” Mr Quadir Ali said.

To this day, all qazis submit copies of the nikahnama with the archives department and the Wakf Board.

“A separate ‘qazat’ section operates at the Wakf Board office where marriage certificates are issued. The head of the section is again appointed with the consent of the council,” he said.

“If anyone has any problems with the qazis or their deputies, then they can directly approach us and get it redressed,” Mr Quadir Ali said.
