Murugan ends his fast-unto-death

On Monday, his wife Nalini too had started fasting asking the authorities to convince her husband to stop his fasting.

Chennai: V. Sriharan alias Murugan, a life convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case who was on a fast to attain "jeevasamadi" since August 18 at Vellore prison, ended his fast-unto-death on Wednesday.

"His fasting came to an end after 12 days and on Wednesday when he sipped tender coconut water," a senior jail official said. Jail officials and his lawyers had many rounds of talk with him and on Wednesday he was told about the possible negative repercussions he might face if he continues the fast without taking care of his health.

Jail officials and the medical team had been trying to convince him for the last 12 days to end his fast, but he continued with it saying that God was calling him.

On Monday, his wife Nalini too had started fasting asking the authorities to convince her husband to stop his fasting.

It may be recalled that Murugan had submitted a petition on July 19 to the Vellore prison Superintendent saying that he would desist intake of food from August 18 to attain "jeevasamadi", a practice followed by sages in ancient days. After Murugan stopped his fasting, his wife too ended her fast.
