Nellore: The stage set for the launch of the eighth satellite of the Indian Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS-1H) on board a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)-C39 at 7 pm on Thursday from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Shar, Sriharikota.
The IRNSS-1H is a replacement for IRNSS-1A whose atomic clocks had failed because of which it could not be used for several applications.
The applications of IRNSS, christened NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constel-lation) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, include helping fishermen to reach potential fishing zones, railways to track train movements, resource management, location-based services, survey and alignment and time synchronised services.
This will be the 42st flight of India's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle during which it will inject the satellite into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit (Sub-GTO).
The rocket will be launched from the Second Launch Pad (SLP) of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. As in the previous six launches of IRNSS satellites, PSLV-C39 will use 'XL' version equipped with six strap-ons, each carrying 12 tonnes of propellant.
