Hyderabad: Most of the rapists in AP and Telangana knew their victims well. The rapists were relatives, neighbours, co-workers, live-in partners and ex-husbands.
According to new data released by the NCRB in 99.7 per cent of rapes reported in AP last year, the rapists were known to the victims. Four rapists were blood relatives of the victims, while over a 100 rapists were family members of the victims.
In Telangana, in 97.9 per cent of rape cases the rapists were known to the victims. Rapes occurred more in nuclear families where parents aren’t around with relatives taking advantage of the situation.
In January, a 14 year old-girl delivered a baby in a government school’s washroom. The police probe proved that the girl was raped repeatedly by her sister’s boyfriend. The suspect, Dilip Sarkar, 39, from West Bengal, admitted that he raped the girl when she was alone.
There are also cases of lovers having consensual sex but rape cases were filed when problems arose in the relationship. Senior police officials say that the cases reported are just the tip of the iceberg.
“Many rapes inside families do not come out at all. Since the victims and the rapists are closely related they try to brush it under the carpet in order to avoid a bad name for the family,” said a senior police official.
