Bid to send triple talaq Bill to select panel foiled
Hyderabad: In a landmark success, the Modi government secured approval for triple talaq Bill after several ‘opponents’ of the legislation made the job easy by not voting.
Earlier, Mr Venkaiah Naidu had taken up voting on the motion to send the triple talaq Bill to a select committee for scrutiny. This was defeated 84-100.
Mr Naidu then conducted the vote through slips, due to changes in the composition of the House at the time of voting.
The YSR Congress’s two members voted against the Bill. The BJP’s top leadership had succeeded in lobbying with the Biju Janata Dal to vote in favour of the Bill.
The six members of the TRS abstained from voting after their parliamentary party leader Dr K. Kesava Rao reportedly received a call from party president and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao telling him not to participate in the voting.
The 12 members of the AIADMK, six members each of the TRS and JD (U) and two members of the Telugu Desam were not present in the House during the voting.
The Bill has already passed the Lok Sabha by a voice vote amidst a walkout by the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamul, DMK and some others.
