AIADMK opposes TT Bill, walks out

Bill meant the party had given up its opposition to the legislation. Even as he dodged any direct confrontation with OPS&Son.

Chennai: And so did the son of Deputy Chief Minister commit blasphemy in hailing the Triple-Talaq Bill in his maiden speech in Lok Sabha on July 25? Amid high praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his farsighted effort to ensure gender equality for Muslim women, Theni MP Raveendranath Kumar had declared his wholesome support for the Bill and thereby turned most faces red in his AIADMK back home, as the party and its late Amma has all along opposed the legislation.

Making amends for Raveendranath’s pro-Bill enthusiasm, the AIADMK members in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday slammed the Bill as ultra vires of the Indian Constitution and staged a walk-out — true to the ‘promise’ made by AIADMK senior D Jayakumar a couple of days back when media persons cornered him asking if Raveendranath’s praise of the Bill meant the party had given up its opposition to the legislation. Even as he dodged any direct confrontation with OPS&Son, Jayakumar made clear that the party’s true position would be made known when the Bill comes up before the Rajya Sabha — thus indicating that the AIADMK will not support it.
