3 e-crematoriums soon for animals at Gajularamaram

The crematoria with multiple furnaces will be set up in the public private partnership (PPP) mode.

Hyderabad: The GHMC will set up crematoria for animals at Gajularamaram, Fathullaguda and Jawaharnagar as part of an Rs 9-crore project to meet the demands of pet lovers and animal activists.

The crematoria with multiple furnaces will be set up in the public private partnership (PPP) mode. The contracted firm would build the crematoria and look after their maintenance.

While pet lovers have long sought such a facility, there was also a need for such establishments to cremate the bodies of animals, especially strays. Currently, the bodies of many dead animals are thrown in dumpyards or in landfills.

The corporation, which has to clear the animal carcasses to maintain public health, has been disposing animals unscientifically at Autonagar dump yard resulting in a foul smell in the nearby areas.

A team of GHMC officials studied the Kerala model and decided to adopt it here. He said the GHMC would develop an app to keep an account of number of animals cremated there.

He said the corporation would set up an independent call centre where pet owners can book the slot for cremating their pet but for the dead animals, pet and stray, to be picked up.
