Telangana: Scholars, reformists want simplicity

The extravaganza has to be stopped, said Mohd Aleem Khan alias Aleem Falki of Muslim Socio Reforms Society.

Hyderabad: Reformists and religious scholars within the Muslim community are happy with the new trend where grooms do not want fancy, expensive marriages and are more than happy with simpler ceremonies. In fact now the reformists are urging the community to opt for easier, simpler marriages that do away with enhanced and expensive pomp and show like huge processions, lavish dinners, music and fireworks display.

Mufti Khaleel Ahmed, vice-chancellor Jamia Nizamia seminary, says the religion stresses on simple marriages. "Unfortunately, people are forgetting the teachings of the Prophet when it comes to marriages. Unnecessary expenditure should be brought down,” he says.

“The extravaganza has to be stopped,” said Mohd Aleem Khan alias Aleem Falki of Muslim Socio Reforms Society.

He says that the money can be used for constructive purposes. “What is the use of hiring three to four bands, have a huge fireworks display and a dozen swanky cars. It is waste of money,” he argues.

Some parents are finding it difficult to marry off their daughters due to financial constraints. “When Allah has given you wealth, it should be used constructively. By spending heavily on food and marriage processions, people are setting a wrong trend and soon it will become a norm," Mr Falki points out.

Shuja Azeez, Assistant Professor, Department of Arabic, Osmania University says that people are now hiring function halls that charge a whopping Rs 5 to Rs 7 lakh for a single programme and spend another Rs 5 to Rs 7 lakh on music, cavalcade of cars, horses, camels and fireworks. "Imagine the benefit it could bring to the newlywed couple if the money is utilized properly. Those who have will spend it and those who cannot afford will put the burden on the bride’s family,” he said.

Young members of the community feel that the scholars should take up the issue as it concerns all.
