Telangana: A 28-year-old man drowns in L&T pit

One of the farmers from his village noticed that he had not returned after a long time and went in search of him.

Hyderabad: A 28-year-old farmer died after falling into a quarry pit dug by L&T in Sangareddy district on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Akula Srinivas.

Sources said L&T had dug up the quarry to extract gravel for the Hyderabad-Sholapur highway road works but it was not barricaded or no warning boards placed at the site.

Villagers said Srinivas, hailing from Chilkapally village in Jarasangam mandal took his cattle for grazing. On the way the cattle stopped at the quarry. He went after them and accidentally fell into the pit filled with water and drowned. One of the farmers from his village noticed that he had not returned after a long time and went in search of him. He found the cattle, went in that direction and found Srinivas had drowned.

The villagers said road works had been going on since months and L&T had been digging pits near fields without taking any precautions or installing signboards.

Villagers recovered Srinivas’ body from the pit which was over 15 feet deep and staged a protest demanding action against L&T officials for negligence. Police registered a case.
