Polluted drinking water puts Hyderabad Old City residents at risk
Hyderabad: Polluted drinking water is putting the health of residents of Bandalguda and Osmanbagh in Kamatipura area of the Old City at risk.
Residents say that they first noticed foul smell in the water supplied by the Water Board in the first week of July and alerted officials.
“The Water Board officials visited the colony and promised to redress our grievance immediately. But nothing has been done so far,” alleged Syed Mustafa, a resident of Osmanbagh.
The residents said that the water supply pipeline had got damaged and drainage water was seeping into the drinking water line.
“We are forced to buy drinking water cans from private suppliers. You can smell the pungent odour from the water by water board. The colour of the water is yellowish,” said Aleem Quadri, another resident.
The residents want the Water Board authorities to take up repairs of the damaged pipeline immediately or replace it, so that such problems do not recur. When contacted, Doodhbowli corporator M.A. Gaffar said that Water Board general manager (engineer) division-IV. Vinod Bhargava had assured him that the problem was localised and limited to a few households.
“I will enquire into it and take necessary action. However, if anyone approaches me directly, the issue can be resolved on war footing,” said Mr Vinod Bhargava.
