Old City of Hyderabad dargah is symbol of communal harmony

Hyderabad: In an area termed ‘communally sensitive’ in the police records, there stands a dargah promoting religious harmony and brotherhood.

The Jhatphat Bee dargah located at the Uppuguda railway station exist in the middle of a Hindu dominated area for the last several decades. Interestingly, even in the worst communal disturbances, the dargah remained untouched.

“It is considered a very holy place in the neighbourhood with people dropping in before heading on some important assignment. They believe a visit to the shrine will get them success,” says Anjamma, a local resident.

According to the Mohd. Subhan, the caretaker, a couple lived here centuries ago and possessed spiritual powers. After their death they were buried in the same place. The legend states that people visited them in their lifetimes and sought their blessings before embarking on new assignments.

“The trend continues and people visit the dargah in thousands. Offerings of flowers and money are made at the shrine by people of all communities. But the most number of visitors belong to the Hindu community,” Mr Subhan said.

P. Ashok Goud, an Uppuguda resident, said that the locals are connected with the place spiritually.

“We all pooled money and constructed a shed for visitors,” Mr Goud said.

Locals provide water to the families who prepare food and hold small functions as 'thanksgiving' whenever any wish is fulfilled. “The place is very small 200 sq. yd. yet one can see people of both communities adjusting and holding separate functions,” says Shailender Singh, another resident of the area.

An official of Chatrinaka police station said that they post constables only during the annual urs celebrations at the dargah. “So far no untoward incident had occurred there and we hope nothing will happen in the future too,” said the official.
