Metro builds Malakpet overbridge in 25 days

Malakpet Metro rail overbridge was on a curve at a height of 58 feet.

Hyderabad: Work on the 164 feet Malakpet Metro rail over bridge, which was stated to be a challenging task, was completed in 25 days. This is one of the eight places where the Metro Rail goes railway tracks, flyovers or roads, and each of them is said to pose its own set of difficulties.

At Malakpet, there was a railway station, an open sewage drain and a narrow rail under bridge through which huge volumes of traffic passes all 24 hours of the day.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited managing director N.V.S. Reddy said the Malakpet Metro rail over bridge was on a curve at the height of 58 feet. “There is a narrow portion over the existing railway bridge. We used the ‘bridge builder’ method that was used for the Begumpet rail over bridge,” he said.

The method involved mounting two 100-ton bridge builders to build the Metro Rail viaduct on both sides of the tracks over the railway bridge. This helped to place the viaduct on the railway bridge. The 12 precast segments were built at the Uppal yard.

Mr Reddy said, “Each precast segment was lifted by cranes and placed on the bridge. The engineering team worked on it at night when relief was provided from the railway traffic. This has helped to finish the work in record 25 days.”
