Hyderabad: Citizens' efforts move the Army

MES repairs damaged Gough Road.

Hyderabad: It took a second citizen shramdaan to get the Military Engineering Services to fix Gough Road. Secunderabad Cantonment residents came together for the second time to fix the road that has been badely damaged for over three years.

The authorities failed to respond to last Sunday’s protest; they got into action after senior citizens and children began working again on Sunday.

The damaged 120-metre section is on the arterial road connecting Kapra, Alwal and Malkajgiri to the city.

Residents at the spot said that a military truck had into a car on the road on Saturday.

“The road has been damaged for years. The fact that it is narrow adds to the traffic burden, causing accidents daily,” said Ms Deepa Shailendra, who was present at the spot.

Though the Military Engineering Service reached the spot and began work to repair the road. locals said more needed to be done.

Residents want the road to be widened to allow free flow of traffic. “This road must be expanded to 100 feet as so many vehicles use it. The Army must address the issue of safety by building walls and even installing CCTV cameras and posting guards. But denying people a chance to use the road wrong,” said Mr Chandra Shekhara.

He added that this was the only cantonment that was blocking roads meant for the civilian public. Over 50 people were present to fix the roads, with many commuters pitching in to help. The road was repaired later in the evening by the MES.
