Over 10,000 Indian workers facing 'food crisis' in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait
Many jobless as firms down shutters due to a downturn.
New Delhi: In what is turning out to be a huge nightmare, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted late on Saturday night that “the number of Indian workers facing a food crisis in Saudi Arabia is over 10,000”, as many have lost their jobs there and Kuwait due to employers there shutting down factories as a result of the economic downturn caused by low oil prices and falling demand.
On Saturday, after a distress tweet to external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj that 800 Indians in the Saudi city of Jeddah alone were unfed for three days after not being paid wages, she immediately ordered that the Indian mission in Jeddah serve food to the 800 Indians there and this was done swiftly.
