Chennai: SHRC seeks report from SP on self-immolation case

Following the incident, AIADMK functionary Anandhan absconded and the police have launched a search for him.

Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission on Thursday issued a notice to the Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police to submit a report on the self-immolation of bar manager Nellaiappan within 15 days. The SP meanwhile, shifted the three police officers from the control room to vacancy reserve on Thursday.

The 38-year-old man who set himself on fire outside the Mamallapuram DSP office on Tuesday morning died with 82 per cent injuries at the Kilpauk government hospital. Nellaiappan who manages bars in Thiruporur and Mamallapuram areas was pressurised by the policemen and local political leaders which made him take this extreme step.

In the clips uploaded on his Facebook page, the deceased claimed that he had handed over about Rs 19 crore to an AIADMK worker Anandhan in the locality and gave lakhs and lakhs of rupees to three police personnel attached to Thiruporur and Mamallapuram police stations. He said that he was being harassed by police and the politicians for bribes to run bars. Also, the dying declaration which was taken by magistrate Gayathri, he stated the names of the police officers, following which three police personnel were transferred to the control room.

Meanwhile, SHRC alleged that the police, instead of taking action had threatened and took bribe from the manager.

Following the incident, AIADMK functionary Anandhan absconded and the police have launched a search for him. Kancheepuram SP Santhosh Hadimani on Thursday transferred Thiruporur Inspector Kannan, Mamallapuram DSP Subburaj and Mamallapuram Inspector Pandian from control room to vacancy reserve.
