Chennai: Neyveli police on Wednesday booked Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi president T. Velumurugan under National Security Act. The former MLA who has been organising a series of recent protests against the Centre and the state on various issues also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami.

He is also known for his recent hate speech during the IPL ban in Chennai initiated by pro-Tamil outfits. According to police sources, Velmurugan, already under arrest for attacking a toll plaza in Ulundurpet, is now hospitalised at Stanley Medical College for urinary infections.

Velmurugan has been informed that he is charged and arrested under sedition charges under section 124, where a person is booked for hate speech attempting to bring contempt. Section 153 A for doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and promoting enmity had also been lodged against Velmurugan, the police said.

Ulundurpet police had already recorded cases against him for harming public property and disturbing public peace. On May 26, Velmurugan visited the violence hit Thoothukudi district. He was arrested by the Neyveli police at Thoothukudi airport and remanded to judicial custody at Puzhal prison, sources added.

Velmurugan was vociferous against the Centre and state on issues like Cauvery water management and permanent job for localities in Neyveli Lignite Corporation. His outfit also took part in the anti-Sterlite protests.
