Thiruvananthapuram: Governor P. Sathasivam has condemned the honour killing of a youth in Kottayam and warned the people to be on their guard against intolerance raising its ugly head in society.
Addressing the valedictory function of the second anniversary of the LDF government here on Wednesday, he said, ‘honour killing’ was unheard of in our state earlier.
“The recent murder of a youth in Kottayam is a warning to us to think deeply about the degeneration of our mindset,” he said.
“Kerala is known for peaceful co-existence and social harmony. Even amidst so many enviable examples of amity, we are often disturbed by instances of political unrest and hatred resulting in bloodshed in some districts and some parts of the state,” he said.
“Let us not forget that true welfare also lies in the people’s right to live happily and without fear. The unending series of political murders and clashes should remind us to be more vigilant in preventing political differences rotting to murderous hatred,” said Mr Sathasivam.
“The state government, particularly the health department and the health workers and doctors of Kozhikode and neighbouring districts deserve appreciation for containing the Nipah virus. At the same time, we have to address the issue of neighbouring states and foreign countries refusing to accept our vegetables and fruits on account of rumours about the Nipah virus,” he said.
