Chennai: Fine slapped on water purifier firm

The unit was installed the same day and the first servicing done within three days of the purchase.

Chennai: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai (North) slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on a RO water purifier manufacturing unit for selling a defective RO water purifier unit to a consumer.

Despite repeated servicing, the unit was not functioning. In his petition, C.Mathusoothanan of West Mambalam submitted that he purchased a RO water purifier manufactured by Aqua Pure Plus Private Ltd., Thirumangalam, on August 25, 2015. He paid Rs 9,500 for the unit.

The unit was installed the same day and the first servicing done within three days of the purchase. The second servicing was done on September 5, 2015.
The company technician found a major defect in the unit, changed vital parts in the unit, defeating the purpose of purchasing the water purifier.

Despite third and fourth servicing, no water was coming through the inlet from the system. Hence, he sought compensation from the company. In his reply, the CEO of Aqua Pure Plus Pvt. Ltd., denied the allegations. The adapter was not covered under warranty and hence the complaint was liable to be dismissed, he said.

The bench comprising president K.Jayabalan and member M.Uyirroli Kannan said that the company had sold a defective product and therefore Mathusoothanan was entitled to a refund of Rs 9,500 and compensation of Rs 10,000 for mental agony and cost of Rs 5000 from the company.
