Chennai: 8th sem results of 160 BE colleges withheld

The university released the 8th semester results for B.E., B.Tech and B.Arch courses on May 25.

CHENNAI: Anna University has withheld the results of over 160 engineering colleges due to non-cooperation for evaluation of answer scripts and pending examination fees.

The university released the 8th semester results for B.E., B.Tech and B.Arch courses on May 25. But students from many top engineering colleges including SSN Engineering College could not see their results as these were withheld for non-cooperation for evaluation. After revamping the evaluation of answer scripts, the university debarred over 1,100 faculty members from valuation, following marks variation in over 50,000 answer scripts of those who appeared for the April/May 2017 exams.

While disciplinary action improved the quality of valuation, it also resulted in faculty members of private engineering colleges staying away from evaluation. So the university sent a circular to all affiliated colleges asking them to send at least 70 per cent of their staff members for evaluation. The circular also warned that it would withhold the results of colleges if they did not comply with the order. “If sufficient numbers of teachers do not come for evaluation, the process will take more time and the announcement of results also could be delayed,” professors explained.

As per the existing rule, faculty members with 3 to 5 years experience in the college and professors who have handled the particular subjects alone are eligible for evaluation. Principals of the affiliated engineering colleges said that some faculty members are afraid to go for evaluation due to the disciplinary action initiated by the university.

“Anna University should not withhold the results of students for the failure of engineering colleges. Students are getting punished, not the colleges. They should stress this point while giving annual approval for affiliation,” a private college principal said. He added that many engineering colleges do not have a sufficient number of qualified faculty members.

University officials confirmed that they have withheld the results of over 160 engineering colleges. “We have started to release the results for some colleges after getting apology letters from them,” the officials said, insisting that the university needs the support of private engineering colleges in finishing evaluation and declaring the results quickly.
