Karnataka: No decision on giving Iskcon Namma canteen

To prove they were below poverty line, beneficiaries would have to submit only an income certificate from the tahasildar's office.

Bengaluru: The state government, which has come up with Karnataka's own avatar of Tamil Nadu's Amma canteens, the Namma or Indira canteens, put to rest rumours that they would be run by Iskcon, which handles its mid-day meal scheme in schools.

Dismissing all talk about Iskcon being roped in for the project, Food and Civil Supplies Minister , U T Khader told reporters that the government would invite tenders for a company to run the canteens. "Bengaluru Development Minister, K J George and I will hold a meeting with the hotels' association to work out the cost of every meal. We plan to have one kitchen in every assembly segment, catering to all its BBMP wards,"' he explained, adding that at least one- and -a half lakh people were expected to use the canteens.

Moving on, he said the Food and Civil Supplies department has further simplified the process of issuing BPL cards. Instead of four documents to prove they were below poverty line, beneficiaries would have to submit only an income certificate from the tahasildar's office.
