Electric spark starts University of Hyderabad blaze

The blaze, experts said, was caused when a spark from electrical wiring came into contact with dry grass.

Hyderabad: A forest fire hit the University of Hyderabad's premises on Thursday evening. The blaze, experts said, was caused when a spark from electrical wiring came into contact with dry grass spread across the University's massive campus grounds.

Deputy registrar P. Thukaram alerted emergency officials immediately after the fire was first detected. As of Thursday evening, fire operations on site were still on. Around 20 members from the university’s staff started to fight the fire using water and nearby objects. A lack of proper road connectivity impeded initial emergency response.

A security officer from UoH said: "The fire started when dry grass - covering the UoH campus grounds - was ignited by a spark from electrical wiring. Our teams are fighting to bring the blaze under control because vehicles have been unable to enter the area due to lack of road connectivity."
