Chennai: Senior citizen fights to get back Rs 50,000

Driven from pillar to post by police.

CHENNAI: At her age, most women would prefer to stay home and lead a peaceful life. But not senior citizen Ronilla Shane, a fighter in her own way.

She had been trying to get back Rs 50,000 given to a couple as an interest-free loan in 2011. More than the couple dodging without repaying her money and by giving her cheques which bounced, the attitude of personnel at the Tondiarpet police station has been a cause of worry for her.

“So far the metropolitan magistrate court at George Town had issued four non-bailable warrants against the couple from December 2014. Every time, the Tondiarpet police claim the couple, Kannan and Eswari of Pudupet, running a gym, is not traceable,” says Ronilla, a retired Binny Mills employee.
She obtained a fresh warrant against the two on March 21 and this time also the police were shrugging their shoulders.

“When I informed the court about the police’s non-cooperation, I was told to approach the higher-ups in police department. And when I go to the Deputy Commissioner, he directs me to meet the Assistant Commissioner. When I met the AC, he said I should meet the crime inspector at Tondiarpet police station. When I meet the inspector again, he is not ready to do anything for me because I approached his higher-ups,” she says.

Not that Ronilla has nothing else to do than going to the police station and court. She had survived two accidents. She had to visit her doctors regularly because of her age. Her daughter living abroad sends her money.

“But I am not going to leave this. I gave them an interest- free loan. And in the last five years they never bothered to give it back. Why should I let my money go like this? I thought police would help me in getting my money back. Now it looks like the cops are on the other side. I don’t know what to say when the case comes for hearing on Saturday. When contacted, Tondiarpet crime inspector Asokan said his team would take up her case seriously.
