Tirunelveli revenue staff to pay man Rs 30,000

In the petition, S. Arumugam of Karivalamvandanallur, Tirunelveli district, submitted that he belonged to Virakodi Vellala community.

Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission directed revenue officials in Tirunelveli district to pay a compensation of Rs 30,000 to a person for denying community certificate for his sons.

In the petition, S. Arumugam of Karivalamvandanallur, Tirunelveli district, submitted that he belonged to Virakodi Vellala community. He studied up to 8th standard and his wife studied up to plus-2. As per government order the Virakodi Vellala community comes under the Backward Class category.

He sought for community certificate from revenue officials for his two sons and submitted school transfer certificate, ration card and Aadhaar card in 2017. He approached Murugan, village administrative officer, Karivalamvandanallur, seeking community certificate. However, he refused to issue community certificate. He said Murugan, R. Sangareswari, revenue inspector, and S. Subramanian, zonal deputy tahsildar, Sankarankoil, Tirunelveli district, refused to issue the certificate to his sons. Hence, he sought action against them.

However, in their reply officials have denied the allegations and sought for dismissal of the petition.

Judge D. Jayachandran said this commission is of the considered opinion that Arumugam and his sons belonged to Virakodi Vellala community which was categorized by the Tamil Nadu government as backward class.

It is duty of zonal deputy tahsildar, Sankarankoil, Tirunelveli district, to issue community certificate to the complainant’s sons as Virakodi Vellala.
