1231 AD Kakatiya pillar sinking in Andhra Pradesh

Jayapa built a temple and installed the Ganapatiswara Linga in honour of the king.

Vijayawada: An pillar dating back to the 1231 AD carrying an inscription of a Kakatiya general is sinking into the ground near Avangadda in AP’s Krishna district.

The pillar carries an inscription by Kakatiya ruler Ganapati Deva’s military general Jayapa Senani, said archaeologist and Cultural Centre of Vijayawada & Amaravati (CCVA) chief executive officer Dr E. Sivanagi Reddy.

Dr Reddy visited the pillar located in the mahamandapa of the Durgamba temple at Ganapeswaram in Avanigadda mandal, Krishna district on Wednesday along with Andhra Arts Academy secretary Golla Narayana Rao and computer G. Manoj.

He said that the inscription is engraved in Sanskrit and Telugu but the Telugu portion is illegible because of its shrinkage.

Dr Reddy said the inscription bore historical significance as Jayapa Senani was picked up from Diviseema as a youth and elevated to the position of military general by Ganapatideva who married two of Jayapa’s sisters, Naramma and Peramma, after he conquered the water fort Jayadurga at Divi, identified with Talagadadivi, close to Ganapeswaram. Jayapa built a temple and installed the Ganapatiswara Linga in honour of the king.

Dr Reddy said that a part of the Telugu inscription needs to be restored by erecting it on a pedestal to display the content for the benefit of research scholars and general public.
