Vijayawada: 1231 AD inscription found

The inscription needs to be restored by erecting it on a pedestal to display the content for the benefit of research scholars and general public.

Vijayawada: An inscription pillar, dated to 1231 AD issued by Jayapa Senani, the Military General of the Kakatiya Ganapati Deva, was found endangered as it was sinking into the ground, said noted archaeologist in the state and the Cultural Centre of Vijayawada & Amaravati CEO Dr E. Sivanagi Reddy.

He visited the sinking inscription pillar at the Mahamandapa in Durgamba temple at Ganapeswaram village in Avanigadda mandal, Krishna district on Wednesday, along with Andhra Arts Academy secretary Golla Narayana Rao and G. Manoj, a computer engineer.

He said that the inscription is engraved in both Sanskrit and Telugu. However, the Telugu script is not legible as that portion got sunk in the ground. Dr Reddy also revealed that the inscription bears historical significance as Jay-apa Senani was picked up from Diviseema as a youth and elevated to the position of Military General by Ganapati-deva, who also married two of Jayapa’s Sisters viz., Naramma and Peramma, after conquering the water fort at Divi, close to Ganapeswaram.

Jayapa built a temple and installed Ganapatis-wara Linga in the honour of his master Ganapatideva, who elevated him as the supreme commander of elephants in the Kakatiya empire.

Dr Sivanagi Reddy said that a part of the Telugu inscription, having information about the donation of lands by Jayapa Senani, who also composed Nrittarat Navali, a treatise on dance. The inscription needs to be restored by erecting it on a pedestal to display the content for the benefit of research scholars and general public. He appealed to the concerned government departments to address the problem immediately.
